Fairness West Virginia

Building a stronger voice for equality in West Virginia.

For nearly seven years, I served as the full-time Communications Director for Fairness West Virginia, the state's leading LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. During that time, I helped shape the organization's public voice, support legislative advocacy, strengthen fundraising efforts, and develop communications that informed, mobilized, and inspired communities across the state.

My work spanned nearly every aspect of organizational communications, including:

  • Communications strategy

  • Brand development

  • Graphic design

  • Publications and print materials

  • Social media management

  • Email marketing and action alerts

  • Website management

  • Legislative communications

  • Public education campaigns

  • Event promotion

  • Media relations

  • Messaging and storytelling

Working in-house also meant serving as a strategic partner across the organization — collaborating closely with program staff, organizers, development staff, and executive leadership to communicate complex issues clearly and effectively.

A new introduction to Fairness
West Virginia.

I designed a comprehensive organizational brochure to introduce Fairness West Virginia's programs, services, and advocacy work to supporters, community partners, legislators, and prospective donors.

The brochure balanced accessible design with clear messaging and became a versatile resource for outreach events, trainings, and community engagement.

Organizational Brochure

Each year, Fairness West Virginia publishes the WV Equality Report Card, an in-depth publication evaluating how state legislators voted on LGBTQ+ policies and protections.

I led the communications strategy, messaging, and design of the report, transforming complex policy data into an accessible, visually engaging publication that informed community leaders, empowered local advocates, and encouraged municipalities to strengthen local fairness protections. A guide explaining how to use a report card to find a legislator's voting record. It includes four steps: finding your legislator with a lookup tool, searching their name, understanding vote colors (green for support, red for oppose, gray for absent, black for not in office), and learning more about bills through additional information.

Event Planning

Organizing and executing annual fundraising galas and legislative lobby days.

From annual fundraising galas to statewide advocacy events, I led the planning, branding, and communications for all of Fairness West Virginia's largest public events.

The organization's annual gala brought together supporters from across the state to celebrate progress, recognize community leaders, and raise critical funds for the year ahead. Each year, I developed the event's creative identity, managed marketing and sponsorship materials, planned the decorations, secured vendors, and oversaw communications from initial promotion through event day.

I also helped launch and grow Fairness West Virginia's annual lobby day at the State Capitol, creating the event's branding, coordinating communications, and developing materials that empowered hundreds of advocates to meet with legislators and share their stories.

Moving our community to action.

Every social media post is an opportunity to inform, inspire, or start a conversation.

Over the years, I led Fairness West Virginia's digital communications across advocacy campaigns, fundraising initiatives, educational series, and day-to-day organizational storytelling. By combining thoughtful messaging with strong visual design, I helped build a recognizable and trusted online presence that kept supporters informed and engaged.
